How to Get More Google Reviews as a Tradesman (and Why It Matters)

Google reviews are one of the biggest factors in local search rankings. Here is a practical guide to getting more genuine reviews and what to do with them.

Why Google reviews matter so much

Google reviews are one of the most powerful things you can do for your local search rankings. They affect both your position in the Google Maps results and how much trust potential customers have in you before they call.

A business with 50 reviews and a 4.8 rating will almost always get chosen over a business with 2 reviews and a 4.0 rating — even if the second business is actually better. First impressions are made before you ever pick up the phone.

The simple method that actually works

The most effective way to get reviews is the most obvious one: ask for them. Most satisfied customers are happy to leave a review — they just never think to do it without being asked.

The best time to ask is immediately after you have finished the job and the customer is happy. Say something like: "I am glad everything worked out. Would you mind leaving me a Google review? It really helps small businesses like mine." Then send them a text or WhatsApp with the direct link to your Google review page.

Make it as easy as possible. A direct link means they do not have to search for you. You can find your Google review link by searching your business name on Google and clicking "Get more reviews" on your Business Profile.

What to put in the message

Keep it short and genuine. Something like:

*"Hi [name], great to see you today. If you were happy with the work, a quick Google review would mean a lot to me — it only takes a minute. Here is the link: [your review link]. Thanks!"*

Do not offer incentives like discounts for reviews — this is against Google's guidelines and can get your reviews removed.

Responding to reviews

Always respond to every review, good or bad. For positive reviews, a short thank you that mentions the job type and location naturally adds more keyword relevance to your profile. For negative reviews, respond professionally and offer to make it right — other people reading it will see how you handle problems.

How many reviews do you need?

There is no magic number, but 10 or more reviews gives you a credible profile. In most local areas, 30–50 genuine reviews with an average above 4.5 will put you in a strong position against most competitors.

The difference between zero reviews and 20 reviews can be the difference between ranking fifth and ranking first in your local area.
